In A Grain of Truth, I return to a cherished childhood legend — The Legend of the Yellow Star — a story that once filled me with pride in Denmark’s courage during World War II. But as I dug deeper, I discovered a more unsettling truth: beneath the tale of defiance lies a complex history, where acts of bravery coexist with moral compromise. Through this journey, I confront the legends that shaped my understanding of the past and uncover the difficult realities of wartime Denmark, including collaborations between Danish companies and the German military.
The stories include:
• Edward Bernays, the father of Public Relations and Sigmund Freud’s nephew;
• Gunnar Larsen, Danish Minister of Transportation and owner of FL Smidth Cement Company;
• Werner Best, known as the “Bloodhound of Paris” for his ruthless deportation of French Jews.
